The latest CD from the Patrick Sweany Band , henryfordbedroom
is a startlingly original tour-de-force of roots music. Rising
star, Patrick Sweany, well known on the American Festival circuit
for his intricate, tasteful acoustic work, impassioned vocals,
and highly original songwriting, showcases a mostly electric
offering with his trio, the Patrick Sweany Band. The trio,
modeled after the late, great Hounddog Taylor's Houserockers,
consists of Patrick on lead vocals and guitar, Ted Pecchio
(formerly of Col. Bruce Hampton's Codetalkers) on BARITONE
guitar, and Clint "the Dover Tornado" Alguire on
drums. This unconventional trio format allows the band a huge
range of dynamic possibilities, from quiet, acoustic sounds,
to hard swinging jump numbers, to overdriven slide guitar boogie,
or full on rock bombast . With his sophomore release, Patrick
continues to establish himself as a major force in Blues and
roots oriented music.
The twenty-nine year old singer/
guitarist originally hailing from Massillon, Ohio performs
a mixture
of musical styles,
drawing on the traditions of the Mississippi delta and Northeastern
Hill country, the wild jug band sounds of Memphis, early
piedmont and ragtime blues fingerpicking, the driving boogie
of the West Helena, Arkansas slide guitar tradition, the
howl of the early Texas bluesmen, and a little West Coast
Swing and New Orleans R&B. These diverse influences come
together seamlessly in Patrick’s recording debut, I
Wanna’ Tell You, and come into full fruition on henryfordbedroom,
to showcase a unique style, firmly rooted in the blues, but
unquestionably his own. This unique style was culled from
years of careful listening to his father’s own playing
at home and in church, as well as his extensive record collection
of both blues and folk artists. Patrick found in such diverse
artists as Charlie Patton, Fred MacDowell, Lightnin’ Hopkins,
Memphis Slim, Jimmy Witherspoon, Wes Montgomery, and Leadbelly,
a universal element that spoke to him, and would not to be
denied. Perfectly comfortable in either solo or group formats,
this multi–faceted artist performs with relentless
enthusiasm, energy, and jaw-dropping showmanship.
In 2003, Patrick Sweany returned
a second time to Merlefest , one of the premier roots and
Americana
festivals in the
world, where, in he shared the stage with Vassar Clements,
Precious Bryant, Steve James, Paul Geremia, Honeyboy Edwards,
Jorma Kaukonen, Chris Smither, Otis Taylor and Roy Book Binder.
He recently taught a very successful weekend at Jorma Kaukonen ’ s
Fur Peace Ranch, and will make appearances at the Queen City
Blues Fest, The Big Bend Blues Bash, and the King Biscuit
Blues Fest. Recent highlights include having toured the nation
with International Blues/Rock Heavyweights, Jimmy Thackery
and the Drivers, sharing the stage with Tab Benoit and Chubby
Carrier at the annual Cottontown Blues Festival , a surprise
headline spot at the Kansas City Gladstone Blues festival,
sharing the stage with the likes of A.J. Croce, K. C. harmonica
legend Little Hatch, and Jimmy Thackery, Performances at
the Chicago House of Blues , including a New Year’s
Eve celebration with The Kinsey Report, Better than Ezra,
and Chris Isaak. Patrick realized a lifelong dream in 2002,
when he was invited to sit in with none other than than Howlin’ Wolf
guitarist Hubert Sumlin, backed by Muddy Waters alumnus Steady
Rollin’ Bob Margolin’s band at the Marietta BluesFest.
The coming months will see Patrick Sweany bringing his soulful
and energetic music to audiences everywhere.
"No matter what kind of gig, from concert hall, to festival, to Juke,
the
Dean Resonator GCE has exactly what I'm looking for. The Resonator and mini
humbucker combination is so simple yet so effective. I get the tone I want no
matter
what I plug it into. Soundmen see me uncase a resonator guitar at
soundcheck and cringe. Five minutes later, sound check is over. The soundman
wants to know "what is that thing?" It takes a tough guitar to live
in the
back of a van for it's entire life and still play as smooth and easy as the
day I first played it. Dean is that Guitar. The same goes for the Dean
Tonics. Just plain tough. The stacked humbuckers drive an old tube amp like
nobody's business. And they've got that retro cool appearance that is so
important. Well, it is to me."
